Shadowban

A shadowban is when a platform quietly reduces the reach of your posts without notifying you.

Definition

Neither Instagram nor X formally acknowledge "shadowbans," but both apply visibility limits on accounts that trip spam heuristics — usually excessive automation, banned keywords in bio, or repeated policy violations.

How to use it

If reach drops 70%+ overnight without a content change, audit for: banned keywords, sudden bulk following, third-party engagement tools, or automated DMs.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a normal reach dip is a shadowban
  • Using bots to boost engagement
  • Reposting the same caption across many accounts
